NL West Roundup: Will D-Backs Be Snakebit By Bullpen in 2018?

February 12, 2018

That famous Alec Baldwin line in the 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross, pretty much sums up the Arizona Diamondback’s big question leading into spring training. The only problem is no one is drinking coffee at Talking Stick at the moment. It is time for one of the “salesman” (relievers) to step into that closing role. Who it is going to be? Time will tell but there are rumors as to a couple favorites who are going to win the “Cadillac El Dorado,” or in this case the closing spot. Archie Bradley is listed as a Top 10 RP Right Now by and he could graduate into the role. However, he might be more valuable as a multi-inning setup guru. 33-year-old Japanese right-hander Yoshihisa Hirano, who the Diamondbacks introduced this morning, is another name to keep an eye on. Barring injury newly acquired Brad Boxberger also might win the job when spring training is all said and done. I’d say Boxberger is the favorite to win the spot, giving the Diamondbacks the ability to place Bradley as the setup man, but we will see what plays out in the following weeks.
